One person may want to stop a repair. Another may want to end a property-damage claim while still sorting out treatment. Another may be asking about the insurance policy itself. Start by naming the specific action you want the insurer to address and ask it to confirm the current claim status in writing.<\/p>\n<p>A useful request identifies the claim number, the date of the crash, the coverage involved if you know it, and the question you need answered. Keep a copy of the request. A clear written record is more useful than relying on a call summary after the file changes hands.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Check_the_claims_current_stage_before_you_request_closure\"><\/span>Check the claim&#8217;s current stage before you request closure<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Gather the documents that show what has already happened. These may include an estimate, a tow bill, a repair authorization, a payment notice, a medical-payment communication, an inspection request, or a release. Each document can raise a different question. Do not assume that closing one portion of a claim resolves another portion or changes the policy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read the declarations page and the policy section that applies to the claim.<\/li>\n<li>Keep the claim number, adjuster contact details, dates of calls, and every email or letter in one folder.<\/li>\n<li>Ask whether the insurer is describing a request to close a file, a withdrawal of a particular payment request, a repair decision, or a policy change.<\/li>\n<li>Ask what written confirmation the insurer can provide after it processes your request.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Put_the_important_questions_in_writing\"><\/span>Put the important questions in writing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The New Mexico Office of Superintendent of Insurance advises consumers to ask questions and request a written explanation when they disagree with an insurer&#8217;s claim handling or settlement decision. That suggestion is practical even when you are considering a voluntary request. Written answers help you compare the insurer&#8217;s explanation with the policy and the documents already in the claim file.<\/p>\n<p>Ask direct questions: What is open today? What action will the insurer take? Does the action concern one coverage or the entire claim? Has any payment, repair authorization, or signed document changed the status? The insurer must answer according to its records and policy. Keep the answer with your own records.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_claim_record_and_a_policy_record_are_different\"><\/span>A claim record and a policy record are different<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A claim concerns a reported event. A policy is the contract that describes purchased coverage for a period of time. A request about a claim does not automatically cancel the policy, and a policy cancellation question does not answer what happened to a claim already reported. Review the actual policy documents before treating either question as settled.<\/p>\n<p>If you cannot understand the insurer&#8217;s explanation or think a claim-handling issue remains unresolved, OSI&#8217;s Consumer Assistance Bureau accepts complaints about insurance claim handling. OSI explains that it cannot decide who caused an accident, determine the value of a claim, or act as a consumer&#8217;s representative. Its process can still be a place to ask about the insurer&#8217;s obligations and the documents you should preserve.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Keep_the_file_intact_while_you_decide\"><\/span>Keep the file intact while you decide<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Save the original photos, report number, estimates, messages, and treatment or work records connected to the collision. Do not discard a document because you asked to close a file.
