Traffic can stop without warning. A driver can change lanes shortly before impact. More than two vehicles can be involved. Road glare, rain, roadway debris, a disabled vehicle, and the timing of brake lights can all affect the account of what happened. Write down the sequence while the details are still clear: where each vehicle came from, which lane each occupied, how traffic was moving, and what changed in the seconds before contact.<\/p>\n<p>Keep that first timeline factual. Separate what you saw from what another driver, witness, report, or insurer later said. A timeline that identifies the source of each detail is easier to review than a polished story built from memory.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_the_following-distance_rule_fits\"><\/span>How the following-distance rule fits<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Section 66-7-318 of the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Code says a driver may not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent for the speed of the vehicles, traffic, and highway conditions. It does not replace the records from a specific crash.<\/p>\n<p>Distance, speed, traffic flow, visibility, lane changes, vehicle condition, and road conditions can all be relevant to that standard. A crash report may identify some of those facts. Photos, video, witness information, and vehicle records can add context that a short report did not capture.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Build_a_usable_evidence_file_within_the_first_few_days\"><\/span>Build a usable evidence file within the first few days<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Save original photos and video from the scene, including wide views, vehicle damage, lane markings, traffic controls, weather, and sight lines.<\/li>\n<li>Write down witness names, contact details, and nearby businesses or homes that may have video before recordings are overwritten.<\/li>\n<li>Keep the crash-report number, repair estimates, tow records, insurer emails, and any notice about an inspection together.<\/li>\n<li>Keep medical instructions, work restrictions, bills, and a dated symptom note in a separate folder that stays connected to the crash timeline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do not edit original images or replace them with screenshots if you can preserve both. New Mexico requires vehicle owners to maintain liability insurance, but the available policy limits and coverage questions depend on the actual policies and the people involved. Keep the declarations pages and letters with the crash records instead of assuming one issue answers the others.<\/p>\n<p>An early repair estimate may explain property damage. It does not answer a medical question. A report that assigns a citation or describes a roadway may help with a timeline. It does not replace other evidence.
